Competent Person for Trenching & Excavating |
Description
OSHA rules require, when applied to trenching or excavation operations, the "competent person" must
have training in, and be knowledgeable about: soil analysis,
the use of protective systems, and the requirements of the
standard. In addition, the "competent person" must
have the authority to take immediate action if a hazard
exists.
Each person who satisfactorily completes the course of
instruction and passes a final examination is presented an ID card for Competent Person for Trenching & Excavation Training,
attesting to the completion of classroom training of
OR-OSHA OAR 437 Division 3 Subdivision P, and WISHA -
Part N WAC 296-155-650(5). Competent

The four hour course will cover these areas:

Federal, Oregon and Washington rules related to trenching
and excavation requirements

Soil analysis/classification methods

Use of protective systems

Sloping and benching

Shield systems
-
Surface/underground installations
-
Access/egress

Exposure to vehicular traffic and falling loads

Hazardous atmosphere

Water accumulation
-
Emergency rescue equipment
