Recognition of Safety Excellence Awards

The Oregon-Columbia Chapter’s Recognition of Safety Excellence (ROSE) Award recognizes chapter leaders in safety excellence, provides an excellent way to document your achievements in safety, and offers an opportunity to receive well-deserved recognition from your peers in the industry. It is also a great tool to conduct a self-evaluation of your safety programs. The ROSE Awards provide the local entrée into the nomination process for the AGCA Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) program. ROSE Awards will be presented at the chapter’s annual business meeting in Portland, Oregon on Friday, January 15, 2010.

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGCA) Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) is the industry’s elite safety excellence awards program. It recognizes construction companies who have developed and implemented premier safety and loss prevention programs, and showcases companies that have achieved continuous improvements and maintenance of their safety and health management systems. Members must be nominated from their home chapter to be eligible. The finalists in each category will compete during the AGCA Annual Convention March 15–19, 2010 in Orlando, Florida.

Process and Selection

Both the CSEA and ROSE programs recognize construction companies that excel at safety and health performance, and closely examine each candidate’s commitment to safety and occupational health management and risk control. The selection process is comprehensive:

  • A single application submittal will suffice for both the CSEA and ROSE awards (CSEA application is completed and submitted to the chapter).

  • Contractor members may apply in only one category (see application, Part 1, Section 2 for list of categories).

  • The application is a step-by-step qualification process. All sections of the application must be completed to qualify.

  • The four-part nomination process includes:
  • Quantitative measures: lost time injury rates and recordable injury rates are important, but the rates will not be the only metric used to determine the winners
  • Checklist – program assessment
  • Qualitative narrative essays: maximum of three typed pages combined for narrative
  • Live presentation: five minutes maximum by the finalists to the independent panel of judges
  • Please pay particular attention to completeness of information, margins, font, typeface, and length of submittal. Exceptions to the requirements will be disqualified.

  • All written submittals for the ROSE awards will be reviewed by a panel of local safety experts.

  • Finalists in each category will be selected and notified by the chapter.

  • Finalists will have an opportunity to give a brief (five minute) live presentation in front of a panel of independent judges.

  • Judges will look for evidence of:
  • company management commitment
  • active employee participation
  • safety training
  • work site hazard identification and control
  • safety program innovation
  • ROSE winners will be announced and formally recognized at the chapter annual business meeting and safety awards program held in Portland on Friday, January 15, 2010. Representatives from award-winning companies, including the Outstanding Award (best of the chapter), will be honored at the awards presentation. News releases will be sent to media statewide. The award winners and photos will be posted on the Oregon-Columbia Chapter website.

  • The Oregon-Columbia Chapter will select finalists in each applicable category and submit those recommendations to AGCA for the CSEA awards. Companies who operate in multiple states are eligible for the chapter’s ROSE Award, however, the AGCA CSEA nomination must be submitted through the company’s home chapter. The Oregon-Columbia Chapter will pay the $200 entry fee for our CSEA award nominees.

  • The AGCA Safety and Health Committee will review the chapter’s submittals during their January 2010 meeting.

  • Finalists in each category will compete during the AGCA Annual Convention in March, 2010 in Orlando, Florida.

  • CSEA finalists will have an opportunity to give an oral presentation in front of a panel of judges.
